About

Carol L. Hornbeck

I am a marriage and family therapist who works with families,

couples and individuals of all ages to discover the resources each

of us already has to heal from past hurts, develop new strengths,

and live lives congruent with our most deeply held values.

I am experienced in areas including:

Grief and loss

Depression and anxiety

LGBTQIA+ Issues

Divorce and step-parenting

Adoption

Parent-child relationship issues

I use primarily Imago Relationship Tools* to help couples improve communication, manage conflict, and navigate life transitions. I am experienced in working with fertility issues, complicated pregnancies, and pregnancy loss.

My work incorporates a variety of play therapy and expressive therapies which I use in work with children, adolescents and adults.

Prior to training as a clinician, I worked for more than 25 years as an educator and consultant to congregations, nonprofits, secular and religious organizations in areas including clergy boundaries and ethics, cultural competency and diversity awareness, and preventing and responding to child abuse and domestic violence.  In addition to my clinical work, I offer consultation to clergy in a variety of areas that support congregational health.

*"Imago Relationship Therapy (IRT) is a form of romantic relationship and couple therapy that focuses on relational counseling that transforms a conflict into an opportunity to grow and heal. IRT is accessible for all partners in romantic relationship, no matter the sexual orientation" (Wikipedia).

Carol is an excellent counselor who brings creativity and energy to her work with clients and their families. Carol brings a wealth of life experience and training to her clinical work and is a valued member of our counseling center.

Laurie Freeman, LMFT

I did co-therapy with Carol for two couples at CTS. She was an insightful partner both in session and when brainstorming ideas for future sessions.

John Goll, N. Illinois Men's Counseling

I have enjoyed working with Carol as a colleague and co-therapist. Among therapists, there is no more valuable skill than to be expert clinically while also being personable, insightful and able to engage clients in a trusting relationship when they are at their most vulnerable point. In this regard, Carol is among the very few truly gifted therapists to whom I would entrust the care of a family member or friend.
